Interviews with the Hilarious Jane Lynch

Posted by Rob on Jan-16-2010 under Glee Interviews, Jane Lynch

Jane LynchThere have been some fun interviews with Jane Lynch (who is officially one of my favorite people) on a few different sites, so here’s a roundup with three of them! I’ve included excerpts to help you pick and choose which you’d like to read. Enjoy! :)

TV.com talked with Jane Lynch, saying she is “the Nicest Person Ever”. Aww! Jane answers some questions about what it’s like to play Sue, her upcoming musical number on Glee and potentially branching out from just comedy.

On playing Sue: “I always say when I put on that track suit, I have a license to say anything I want. I think it’s probably very good therapy, because I’m a much nicer person at home. I get it all out at work, and that kind of contemptuousness and heinous behavior is just very shallowly below the surface for me, so it’s kind of nice.”
On Sue’s upcoming musical number: “It’s kind of a dream come true because I love to sing. I got to sing in A Mighty Wind… It’s not as easy as one thinks. You have to be right on pitch-wise and you have to be right on time-wise, and I always thought I was very good at those things, but according to Adam [Anders, Glee's musical producer] I am not. He had to direct me several times.”

Lynch also talked to LocateTV.com while at an “indoor/outdoor Fox party” which there have been a few of recently, especially since there’s a lot to celebrate with Glee’s award nominations!

Lynch, 49, had appeared as a guest star or recurring character in a host of TV series before Glee put her by far under the brightest spotlight she’s ever basked in.

“Because I’ve been doing this for so long, you fuel yourself for disappointment,” she says. “But you get over the success quickly, too. So I’m not walking around going ‘Yesssss!’ I’m still doing my job. And believe me, this is gratifying to have four people surrounding me as I sit here. I feel ridiculous. But when this show ends I’ll be movin’ on and doin’ something else. And maybe it won’t be as big a success. So you really have to cherish these moments.”

Lastly, Guardian.co.uk chatted with Lynch after her Golden Globe nomintation at the Glee set on Paramount Studios. You’ll get a peek at a few of Sue’s hilarious lines, and Jane talks about her experience growing up in Chicago. She also mentions how Obama is a “huge disappointment” to her for not tackling the gay marriage issues. The article is rather long, but definitely worth the read!

Lynch herself barely thinks about being an openly gay actor in Hollywood. “I think if I were an ingénue – if I were Kate Winslet – it probably would hurt my career, but because I’m Jane Lynch and I’m a character actor, the world isn’t projecting their romantic fantasies on me.”

They are, however, projecting their values on to Lynch’s private life. This past year saw a nationwide rejection of legalising gay marriage, stripping gay Americans of their hope for equal civil rights. “Shouldn’t there be safeguards against the majority voting on the rights of a minority?” Lynch wonders. “If people voted on civil rights in the 60s, it would have never happened. It took somebody like [President] Lyndon Johnson going, ‘F all of you! I’m going to do this.’” She pauses for a moment, then says, “Obama won’t do it. He’s a huge disappointment to me.”
